The municipality of Rio Hurtado is located in the northern part of the province Limarí - IV Region of Coquimbo, in the Andean Foothills of Hurtado Valley.
The Hurtado River Valley has a history dating back to the Cretaceous period (14 to 70 million years), because in this place found the only dinosaur remains in Chile.
